A Framework for BioCuration Workflows (part II) Nature Precedings
Martin Krallinger.
This is the second part of the talk ‘A Framework for BioCuration Workflows’, given by Martin Krallinger from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre at the 'Text Mining for the BioCuration Workflow' workshop. The first part was held by Gully APC Burns (USC Information Sciences Institute, USA). This presentation covered some of the main general tasks often shared by existing literature biocuration workflows: Identification of relevant articles, identification and normalization of the actual bio-entities, the extraction of the annotation event and the identification of some evidential support (e.g. experimental evidence). Some of the important aspects, bottlenecks and potential text mining approaches were briefly...

A framework for the design and analysis of incentive systems for food safety control in supply chains AgEcon
van Wagenberg, Coen P.A.; Backus, Ge B.C.; van der Vorst, Jack G.A.J.; Urlings, Bert A.P..
Since 2005 the EU food industry has primary legal responsibility for food safety control. This requires new responsibilities and relationships between government and industry, and between companies. This research presents a framework for incentive systems for food safety control in supply chains. It emphasizes key elements of food safety control from multiple perspectives and provides insights for the design and analysis of incentive systems for food safety control. An incentive system combines inter-company incentive mechanisms with intra-company decision making processes to control a hazard within the legal environment. Incentive mechanisms, which consist of a performance measure and a performance reward, induce companies to use control measures. The...

A general-purpose method for two-group randomization tests AgEcon
Kaiser, Johannes; Lacy, Michael G..
We outline a novel approach to calculate exact p-levels for two-sample randomization tests. The approach closely resembles permute in its applications, with the main difference being that the results are approximated only if the execution time needed to calculate exact p-levels would exceed a specified maximum. We demonstrate its use by deriving p-levels for the significance of Somers’ D, the coefficient of variation, the difference in means and in medians, and the difference in two multinomials.

A glimpse on biological activities of tellurium compounds Anais da ABC (AABC)
Cunha,Rodrigo L. O. R.; Gouvea,Iuri E.; Juliano,Luiz.
Tellurium is a rare element which has been regarded as a toxic, non-essential trace element and its biological role is not clearly established to date. Besides of that, the biological effects of elemental tellurium and some of its inorganic and organic derivatives have been studied, leading to a set of interesting and promising applications. As an example, it can be highlighted the uses of alkali-metal tellurites and tellurates in microbiology, the antioxidant effects of organotellurides and diorganoditellurides and the immunomodulatory effects of the non-toxic inorganic tellurane, named AS-101, and the plethora of its uses. Inasmuch, the nascent applications of organic telluranes (organotelluranes) as protease inhibitors and its applications in disease...

A Global Model for Agriculture and Bioenergy: Application to Biofuel and Food Security in Peru and Tanzania AgEcon
Elbehri, Aziz; McDougall, Robert; Horridge, Mark.
This paper describes a global model for agriculture and bioenergy (GLOMAB) that incorporates biomass, biofuels and bioelectricity sectors into the GTAP-Energy model by expanding the global GTAP database, production and consumption structures. Biofuels are separated between first- generation (sugar ethanol, starch ethanol) and second- generation (cellulosic ethanol) biofuels and associated biomass feedstocks (maize, sugar cane, crop residues, woody biomass). Beside biofuels, the model also incorporates bioelectricity (as separate form conventional electricity) which competes for the same biomass feedstocks with cellulosic ethanol sector (agricultural residues, woody biomass). With this broad-based representation of the bioenergy system likely to prevail...

A globális gazdasági válság és a magyarországi agrárgazdaság kilátásai AgEcon
Magda, Sandor; Magda, Robert.

Simon, Szilvia.

A Government Decision Model for Invasive Species: Choosing the Most Efficient Government Program for the Management of Livestock Diseases AgEcon
Zhang, Yichen; Muhammad, Andrew; Coble, Keith H..
The impact of invasive species has grown substantially in recent years as evident by the trends in government expenditures in response to outbreaks. In this paper, authors analyze advantages and disadvantages of current government compensation measures for invasive species. The conceptual models are built to describe the relationship between producers’ utility and the effect of adoption of different measures under different observability condition. As a case study, a survey is designed to analyze producer behavior in mitigating AI & END outbreaks.

A gravity model approach to forecasting tuberculosis transmission in cattle AgEcon
Xie, Fang; Horan, Richard D.; Wolf, Christopher A..
Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle has caused significant economic losses to livestock producers and has proven difficult to eradicate. It is suspected that cattle movement across different farms and regions is one of the key factors of bTB transmission in the United States. Prior attempts to model the epidemiology of bTB infection within cattle to predict disease transmission have not adequately captured the behavioral aspects of trade. A better understanding of livestock trade patterns would help in predicting disease transmission and the associated economic effects. In this paper, we develop a gravity model of livestock trade and link it to an epidemiological model of bTB transmission, with the goal being that this information could lead to improved...

Pozitív reziduális hatás csupán a...

A history of demands: philosophy and agrobiology. The significance of the founding principles of organic farming within the framework of contemporary development Organic Eprints
BESSON, Y..
Organic farming originally deals with the problematic nature/technique within a holistic view. The order of things inspires organic agronomy and social thoughts on agriculture. The link between what is and what has to be socially is not thinkable within modern right and ethic, but it is in accordance with the ancient philosophy. A. Howard, R. Steiner, H.P. Rusch, M. Fukuoka, found their biology according to this fundamental way of behaving. The biology of those founders stands between various philosophical speculations, esoteric speculations, empirical observations, and scientific approaches. According to the ancient philosophy, these authors are suggesting an imitation of nature based on a cyclic understanding. Human intrusion in nature, although founding...
